Unit 4 Stories and Poems
Lesson 23 The Giant (Ⅱ)
1. Analysis of the Students 
The students of Grade 9 have mastered certain vocabularies,expressions and structures. They also have the abilit of self-teaching and working in groups. Most of them are willing to express their opinions in English.
2. Analysis of Teaching Content
Lesson 23 is the fifth lesson in Unit 4, Book 5.This unit focus on the subject stories and poems, also teach the students cultural about European. Students cares about the subject because it is close to everyone. Lesson 23 mainly talks about the fairy tale of the giant (the second part), let students get more moral.
【知识目标】
To master the words: peek, softly, scene, crawl, selfish, knock, spread, neck, wicked.
2. To master the expressions: break out in blossom, stretch out, ever since
【能力目标】
Improve the students’ ability of speaking, listening, reading and writing. Students can understand the fairy tales well.
【情感目标】
Students can enjoy the pleasure of literature.
【教学重点】
Read a few old Chinese poems.
【教学难点】
Read a few old Chinese poems.
Tape recorder, Multimedia

Step 1. Warm-up
Review: Retell the first of The Giant by the two pictures.
Step 2. Presentation
Guess: Show the pictures and ask students:
What will happen in the story? 
What happened to the garden in the end?
2. Explain the new words.

Read the lesson and write true (T) or false (F).
A. The giant saw something wonderful after he jumped out of his bed. (    )
B. The children entered the garden by way of the gate.  (   )
C. The giant let only one little boy play in his garden.  (   )
D. Along with the children came the spring.  (    ).
Check the answers.
Explain the language points.
knock down  击倒;撞倒;拆毁;否定(建议等)
I carelessly knocked the cup down.
我不小心将杯子撞倒了。
It’s a pity that the old building was knocked down.
很可惜,那栋老楼房被拆毁了。
stretch out                伸出;伸直;延长
They stretched out on the bed.
他们伸直四肢平躺在床上。
no longer意思是“不再”。not…any longer,
not…anymore (any more), no more:“不再”的意思,表示“数量、程度、时间”等的变化。它们基本上都可以互换使用。但是,说明“时间”时,一般多用no longer或not any longer。
He’s no longer bought pencils.
他不再买铅笔了。(数量)
There is no more milk.
牛奶不再有了。(数量)
He’s no longer fit to be member of this group.
他不再适合做这组的成员了。(程度)
Lisa isn’t a little boy any more.
丽莎不再是个小孩了。(程度)
Mike doesn’t live here any longer.
麦克不再住这里了。(时间)
I can’t wait any longer.
我不能再等了。(时间)
along with       和……一起;随着
I like to bring my dog along with me.
我喜欢带着我的小狗。
Can you go along with her?  
你能与她同行吗?
I’ll go along with you on this one.  
在这一点上我同意你的看法。
ever since then   从那时起;从那以后
Ever since then I’ve found that
从那时起,我已经发现那件事。
Step 3. Practice
Listen and follow to the tape.
Finish the exercise on page 57.
Read Danny’s diary about The Selfish Giant and fill in the blanks. The first letter is given.
I really enjoyed The Selfish Giant when I first read it. This story is about a selfish
g_____ who later changed. At first he thought only about himself. He didn’t care about others at all. He didn’t like the children playing in his g______, and he drove them away. The following spring, his garden was c______ with snow, and the cold winds kept the birds away.
    The giant was sad. He didn’t know why spring hadn’t come. One day, to his surprise, he saw some children coming back to his garden through a h____ in the garden wall. As soon as the children came back to the garden, spring returned with them. It was lovely! The giant’s heart melted. He k______ down the wall. E____ since that day the children have always had a place to play. It’s a really moving story with a wonderful moral.
Step 4. Consolidation
1. Match the titles with the key words on page 57.
2. Choose one of the tales and describe it.
3. Report.
4. Retell the story (with the pictures.)

2. Finish exercises of this lesson.
